The Royal Standard is the journal of Thorough Press, an imprint of the Strafford Institute. It welcomes serious essays, review essays, book reviews, translations, archival discoveries, and shorter notes bearing upon statesmanship, political order, religious inheritance, constitutional life, and the traditions that formed the Anglo-American world.
The journal expects clear claims, disciplined prose, and real engagement with primary sources or serious scholarship. Polemic is welcome when it is earned by evidence, judgment, and style. The journal is especially interested in work that revisits old controversies with fresh seriousness, reviews recent books of consequence, recovers forgotten materials, or places political and religious questions within a longer historical frame. Submissions may be academic, essayistic, or literary in form, provided they are exact in fact and controlled in expression.
Essays and review essays ordinarily should run between 2,500 and 6,000 words. Book reviews ordinarily should run between 1,000 and 2,000 words. Shorter notes, translations, and archival discoveries may be considered at other lengths. Submissions should be prepared in clean prose, with citations supplied where needed. Chicago-style notes are preferred for scholarly work.
The first issue of The Royal Standard is expected to appear in January 2027. Work for the first issue should be submitted by December 1, 2026. Prospective contributors may inquire with a proposed title or subject, a brief description of the work, and, where available, a writing sample or prior publication.
Submission does not guarantee acceptance, publication, response, or editorial correspondence. The Institute may decline work at any stage. It may also suggest revision, request further materials, or consider a submission for a later issue.
Contributors are expected to submit their own work. Previously published material should be clearly identified. Quotations, translations, citations, images, and archival materials should be properly attributed and used with appropriate permission where required.
Unless otherwise agreed in writing, copyright remains with the author. Publication terms, permissions, editing, republication, and related matters will be addressed before accepted work is published.
